Financial Assistance for Living Donors

The Meredith Haga Foundation (MHF) provides direct financial assistance to living organ donors to help offset household expenses during recovery. Assistance is based entirely on the donor's financial need and is paid directly to the donor.

HOW THIS PROGRAM WORKS

  • We work on referrals from transplant centers. Social workers or transplant coordinators submit requests on the donor's behalf.
  • No application from the donor is required, and there is no pre-approval process.
  • Assistance is based on the needs of the living donor and is available to donors anywhere in the United States.
  • Requests may be submitted pre- or post-donation surgery.
  • The committee reviews referrals on a rolling basis, typically within 48 hours.
  • Every request is reviewed case by case, need by need. Funding is not guaranteed.
  • Upon approval, the check is sent directly to the living donor within a few weeks of surgery —
    never to the recipient or transplant center.

ELIGIBLE EXPENSES

  • Mortgage or rent for the donor's residence during recovery
  • Gas, propane, and/or electric utility bills
  • Phone bills
  • Trash collection and water fees
  • Childcare / daycare expenses for the donor's children
  • Caregiver expenses for the donor, if needed
  • Post-donation support services
  • Other unexpected expenses arising from the donation

INELIGIBLE EXPENSES

  • Expenses related to testing, including travel to testing/evaluation appointments
  • Past bill balances incurred prior to donation
  • Expenses related to complications not resulting from the donation
  • Wage loss

REFERRAL & ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Referral must come from a transplant center social worker or transplant coordinator (not the donor directly).
  • Donor must have already completed living organ donation.
  • Financial need should be documented with copies of current monthly household expenses (see Page 3).
  • To refer a living donor, complete the attached Intake Form (pages 2–3) and return it to our office by email using the contact information below
